A HOME FOR YOUR STORY
Looking for a Campfire or Obsidian alternative for novel writing?
The right writing app should fit the way you think about your story. Campfire brings dedicated writing and worldbuilding tools together. Obsidian gives you a flexible space for connected notes. VeilPlume is developing a cozy, book-centered workspace for chapters, characters and the worlds around them.
Where VeilPlume stands today: you can explore a free fictional demo now. The full workspace is private during development, and purchases are not open. This is a guide to the approach and current capabilities, not a claim that VeilPlume already replaces every feature of an established app.
VeilPlume and Campfire: dedicated worldbuilding
Campfire offers manuscript writing alongside modules for characters, timelines, maps, languages and other world details. Its free plan has limits, while paid options include monthly, annual and lifetime plans. Collaboration and PDF or EPUB manuscript export are among its published features.
VeilPlume’s private workspace organizes each book around chapters and guided collections for your world. It includes character profiles, timelines, family trees and imported maps. The aim is a quiet writing environment where your manuscript and reference material stay close together.
If you need an established collaborative workflow or publication-oriented exports today, look closely at Campfire’s current offering. If you are exploring a more book-centered writing nook, try VeilPlume’s demo to see whether its organization suits you. VeilPlume currently offers DOCX and plain-text manuscript export in its private workspace; it is not a professional typesetting service.
VeilPlume and Obsidian for novel writing
Obsidian stores notes on your device and supports offline use. Links, a graph and Canvas help connect and arrange ideas, while plugins and themes let you customize your setup. Its core app is free; Sync and Publish are optional paid services.
For a novel, that flexibility lets you build your own system for scenes, research and character notes. VeilPlume takes a more guided approach: books, chapters and worldbuilding collections already have places in the workspace. The choice is about the workflow you enjoy, rather than one tool being universally better.
Local storage is part of both approaches, but it works differently. VeilPlume’s books currently stay in this browser on this device. Downloaded backups are essential, and there is no automatic book sync between devices. VeilPlume is not an Obsidian plugin and does not promise to import an entire vault, its links or its plugins.

Choose with a small piece of your story
- Draft a scene. Check whether chapter navigation and the writing area feel comfortable.
- Find a character detail. Decide whether you prefer guided profiles or freely linked notes.
- Plan a world event. Think about whether you need a timeline, a map or a flexible visual canvas.
- Check how you will keep your work. Try the export and backup workflow before moving a whole manuscript.
VeilPlume’s private workspace accepts TXT, Markdown and DOCX manuscripts with an import preview. That is not a direct Campfire project or Obsidian vault migration: complex formatting, annotations and linked world data may need separate work. Keep your originals. The import and backup guide explains the current boundaries.
